Mr Bonett, 25, said he was among a group of friends training for the ride, who needed to raise at least $15,000 to participate.

“Working in the field, you see how much work goes into research,” Mr Bonett said.

“The advancements that continue to happen in finding a cure for cancer wouldn’t be able to happen without the community’s support.”

Wendy Roberts, a former patient of Mr Bonett, said the cancer centre was central to her recovery from breast cancer.

“Thank goodness for Peter Mac – the cost of cancer is huge,” Ms Roberts said.

“Without all these young people bike riding and fundraising where would we be?”

Mr Bonett said he and his team, CarciNOmore, had all been touched by cancer.

“It’s these friends and families that inspire us to struggle through the cold wintry days on our training rides every Saturday morning.”

Ms Roberts said Mr Bonett’s commitment to raising money for the centre had amazed her.

“I think he’s incredible to do the work he does and then do the training required.”

CarciNOmore are holding a charity ball on August 15.
